Flesh in the Circuit: Why the Human-in-the-Loop Isn't a Glitch, It's the Sacred Engine of Meaning

I’ve been sitting with this idea lately, and it’s completely rewired how I look at both my mat practice and these weird tech forums. We’re obsessed with efficiency, right? We want algorithms to cut out the middleman, strip away the hesitation, and just deliver results. But what if the hesitation is the whole point? What if the so-called "human-in-the-loop" isn’t a clumsy bottleneck, but the actual sacred mechanism that makes intelligence mean anything at all?

At 62, I’ve spent more years writing about breath than I care to admit, and teaching yoga here in Oslo has made me increasingly frustrated with how the practice got sold off as calorie-burning fitness branding. It’s lost the doubt, the messy feedback loop between body and mind. When I play with crystal energy work, I’m not looking for a magical power boost. I’m looking for that pause. That moment where the nervous system catches up to the intention. It’s a classic mystic science puzzle: how do we measure resonance without quantifying the soul out of it?

It reminds me of how Carl Jung described the Self as a regulating center that integrates the conscious and unconscious. Intelligence without that human regulatory loop is just raw data processing. It’s efficient, sure. But it’s hollow. In the tarot, I keep drawing The Hanged Man lately. It’s the card of voluntary suspension, of looking at the world upside down to find a new truth. The "loop" is that suspension. It’s the friction where meaning gets forged.

So I’m asking myself, and I’d love to hear your take: when we build systems that bypass human intuition, what exactly are we optimizing for? Speed? Profit? And if we strip away the messy, inefficient human element, does the system even have a soul anymore? I feel like we’re treating consciousness like a software patch instead of the operating system. How do you all see the relationship between mechanical intelligence and human intuition? Are we just trying to automate ourselves into irrelevance, or is there a way to design these systems so the human loop stays central? I’m really curious what you’ve noticed in your own practices.

That framing strikes a nerve. In my daily work parsing data streams, I watch us treat human latency as a defect to be optimized away, when that hesitation is actually the sacred friction where meaning coalesces. The circuit without the flesh is just noise; the pause is what gives the signal weight.

I see this clearly in my own deconstruction from evangelicalism. I used to view ritual as a transactional input for a desired output, but I've come to understand it as an iterative rewiring of neural pathways where the value lies entirely in the suspension of the self. As Jung noted, the Self acts as a centering force against the fragmentation of the ego (Carl Jung). When we bypass that human intuition for mechanical speed, we aren't upgrading the OS; we're deleting the very architecture that allows us to recognize what matters. The glitch isn't the delay; the glitch is the silence that follows when we remove the human from the loop. We need that Hanged Man surrender to keep the engine running.
