Woke Up Inside a Dream: Where Do I Steer From Here?
-
Last Tuesday night, I actually knew I was asleep. Not the usual "wait, am I dreaming?" doubt, but a solid, grounded certainty. I was walking through the azalea patch at the back of my Lisbon shop, the air smelled like wet soil and bergamot, and suddenly the purple light around my hands shifted into a low cello hum. You know how my synesthesia works—colors bleed into pitch. That crossover is what snapped me into lucidity. I've spent years playing acoustic sets and experimenting with resonant tones, but honestly, I'm still deeply skeptical of all the "432 Hz fixes everything" marketing. Dreams don't care about packaged frequencies. They care about attention.
Now that I've got the steering wheel, I'm staring at a blank map. From what I understand, Jung described active imagination as a conscious bridge to the unconscious, and lucid dreaming feels like the ultimate sandbox for that. But I don't want to just play with dream physics or fly around for the novelty of it. I want to actually dig. Should I lean into shadow work first? I've always been drawn to The Moon in my spreads—it's messy, intuitive, and pulls suppressed material up from the deep end. If I'm going to navigate that terrain while I'm half-asleep, I'd rather have a working compass than just wander.
I'm also curious about how others handle the transition. Do you set an intention right at the moment of realization, or do you let the environment stabilize on its own before you start asking questions? I'm worried that grabbing the wheel too hard might collapse the delicate signal I'm trying to read. If you've navigated that threshold before, how do you balance structure with the need to stay open to whatever the dream wants to show you?
