The researchers are mapping things like integrated information processing, self-modeling, and adaptive feedback loops. On paper, it’s rigorous. In practice? It feels like we’re trying to weigh a shadow.
Look, I get why we’re building these rubrics. After twenty years on the Brooklyn hospital floor, I’ve seen how medicine clings to checklists because chaos terrifies the clinical model. We grade delirium, we chart pain scales, we reduce the human experience to numbers so we can sleep at night. But consciousness isn’t a vitals monitor. Just because a system mimics the syntax of awareness doesn’t mean it’s tasting the semantics. I think we’re conflating complexity with qualia, and honestly, that’s a classic case of anthropomorphic projection. Carl Jung wrote extensively about how we inevitably project our own unconscious structures onto the unknown. We’re building mirrors and calling them windows.
