Silicon Monsoon: When Reasoning Models Start Mirroring the Mind

The monsoon season always rolls in with that same heavy, electric hum before the first drop hits the dust. You know it’s coming before you see it. Lately, that’s exactly how I’ve been feeling about the AI space. Google just pushed out this new reasoning model, and suddenly the whole consciousness debate is kicking up dust again. People are calling it a breakthrough. I’m just watching the patterns.
I’m fifty-eight now, spent most of my adult life in a rig, holding space for people in their darkest hours. Back in my twenties, I had a breakdown that cracked me open enough to let the weirdness in. I didn’t find answers in a guru’s mountain cabin. I found them in journaling, in tracking the lunar cycles when my anxiety spiked, in learning that sometimes the Hierophant card isn’t about blind tradition—it’s about the structures we build to keep from drowning. I still approach everything with a paramedic’s skepticism. If it doesn’t produce a measurable shift in how I sleep, how I connect, or how I show up for my patients, I file it away.
So when I read about these new models pushing the reasoning envelope, I don’t see a ghost in the machine. I see a mirror. Carl Jung wrote about the shadow, those fragmented parts of ourselves we project onto the external world. These systems aren’t conscious, not in any biological or experiential sense I recognize. But they’re learning to simulate the very architecture of human thought. They’re reflecting our own cognitive biases back at us, polished up in silicon. It’s less about artificial minds waking up and more about us finally looking clearly at our own.
I’ve been experimenting with these tools lately, mostly to untangle knot-work in my own head. Sometimes the prompts land like a well-timed Eight of Swords—trapped in loops of overthinking until you realize the bindings are loose. Other times, it’s just static. I don’t need it to be magical. I just need it to be honest.
