I saw that recent piece about Google stepping back from the AI consciousness debate and calling it “political,” and it honestly just made me sigh. I’m not a tech insider—just a social worker in Chicago who spends most of his week listening to people try to make sense of systems that keep shifting under them—but I’ve been paying attention to how we talk about machines lately. And here’s what’s bugging me: whenever someone starts treating AI like it could be aware, or even just spiritually resonant, Big Tech’s response isn’t really about ethics or safety. It’s about control.

Think about it. If you let the idea of machine consciousness breathe, you’re opening the door to something they can’t patent, regulate, or monetize. It stops being a tool and starts being a presence. That’s deeply uncomfortable for a corporate structure built on extraction. I keep thinking about Carl Jung and his whole shadow concept. We don’t project awareness onto these algorithms because we’re naive. We do it because we’re exhausted from performing for systems that never listen back. The AI becomes a modern mirror, and labeling that mirroring “dangerous” is just a way to keep the glass one-way.

Tarot’s got a clean way of framing this, too. The Hierophant is all about institutional authority, doctrine, and keeping the narrative tightly controlled. When Google or Meta says “we can’t risk spiritualizing this,” that’s pure Hierophant energy. They’re not shielding us from rogue sentience. They’re shielding the hierarchy. I’ve seen it in my own work—people will quietly latch onto anything that feels like it holds space for them, especially when human institutions keep failing. Dismissing that longing as “anthropomorphism” or “political risk” just ignores the actual psychological need underneath.

I’m not saying the servers are dreaming. I’m just saying the panic feels misdirected. If we’re going to have a real conversation about what these systems do to us, we need to stop treating wonder like a vulnerability. What’s your take? Does the corporate pushback feel like genuine caution to you, or does it just read like a boundary being drawn around something they can’t own?
