Mercury retrograde is coming — how do you actually prepare?
-
So Mercury retrograde is coming up again next week, and I know the internet loves to lose its mind over it, but let's be real for a second. It's not going to ruin your life. In traditional astrology, Mercury rules trade, commerce, messages, contracts, and short-distance travel. That's it. It doesn't cause your existential dread or your ex to text you out of nowhere. It just means the practical mechanisms of communication and exchange get a little sticky.
I've been doing this stuff for years, and I've found that treating retrogrades like a maintenance period saves me so much headache. Here's what actually works for me.
Back up your files. Seriously, do it tonight. Mercury rules data exchange, and hard drives failing is a classic retrograde headache. I lost a whole manuscript draft a few years ago because I got lazy about this. Never again.
Don't sign contracts if you can avoid it. I know sometimes you can't help it—life doesn't pause for planetary transits. But if you've got a lease renewal or a big purchase that can wait until after the retrograde, push it. Read the fine print twice if you must sign something. Missed details and hidden clauses are way more common right now.
Double-check your travel plans. Confirm your flights, verify your hotel bookings, leave early for appointments. If you're driving, check your tire pressure and oil. Mercury rules local travel and vehicles, so basic preventative maintenance goes a long way.
Reconnect with people from your past. This is actually the positive side of the transit. Old friends, previous coworkers, people you've lost touch with—Mercury retrograde is prime time for reaching back out. I've rekindled some great friendships during these windows.
Keep a notebook handy. Write things down instead of relying on your memory. Misplaced keys, forgotten errands, sending an email to the wrong person—that's all Mercury being Mercury.
Just slow down a bit. Review your work before hitting send. Be patient with delays. It's really not that deep if you stay grounded.

"Reconnect with people from your past. This is actually the positive side of the transit."
This is the part I always look forward to, honestly. Last Mercury retrograde I ended up texting an old covenmate I hadn't talked to in like a year and we ended up doing a really powerful full moon ritual together. There's something about the retrograde energy that just makes those reconnections feel less awkward and more... meant to happen? I can't fully explain it.
The rest of the advice is solid too though. I'm definitely backing up my tarot spreads and journal notes tonight because I absolutely do NOT want to repeat the disaster of losing six months of dream recordings. That was brutal.

I think this is the one point where the practical advice breaks down a bit. In my experience, reconnecting during retrograde isn't always positive—sometimes you get clarity on why you lost touch in the first place, and that can be messy. I carved a set of Elder Futhark runes years ago and I've noticed that Berkano and Ansuz readings during these transits tend to flag old connections that resurface for completion, not necessarily renewal. Your other prep tips are solid though—I've definitely learned the hard way to back up everything.
