I was sitting in my Burlington office last Tuesday, watching the sleet hammer the windows, when a client told me she’d been tracking her meditation consistency with a fancy EEG headband. She thought hitting a certain “focus score” meant she was finally healed. I had to gently explain that inner alchemy isn’t a productivity metric. It hit me right then how relevant the news is about those Australian researchers developing non-invasive neural interfaces. They’re reportedly beating Neuralink to the punch with wearable tech that can actually read brain states without cracking skulls. On paper? Pretty wild. In practice? I’m equal parts fascinated and deeply skeptical.

Look, I love MysticScience. The idea that we might finally map the neurology of sustained presence without invasive surgery is huge for meditation research. But as a therapist who’s spent two decades untangling spiritual bypassing, I keep coming back to one question: who controls the narrative when our inner states become data points? We’re already drowning in an individualistic wellness culture that treats enlightenment like a subscription service. If biofeedback apps start promising optimized bliss, we’re just going to see more people bypassing their actual trauma, chasing a metric instead of doing the slow, unglamorous shadow work Jung wrote about.

Tarot keeps reminding me of this tension. The Hermit doesn’t carry a lantern to scan his aura with an app; he carries it to sit with the dark, unmeasurable parts of himself. Real inner alchemy isn’t about efficiency. It’s about showing up for the messy, non-linear process of transformation, even when the numbers look terrible. It’s why I always steer my clients toward MoonRituals and seasonal cycles instead of algorithmic tracking. The moon doesn’t care about your productivity. And let’s be real about the justice angle, too. These interfaces are going to be expensive. Will they end up in the hands of wealthy retreat-goers while communities that actually pioneered contemplative practices get left out? Again?

I’m not saying we should ignore the science. I’m saying we need to ground it in ethics and collective care. If this tech ever drops into mainstream meditation research, I want to see it paired with trauma-informed frameworks and decolonized teachings, not just sold as another hack for peak performance. Has anyone else been tracking wearable biofeedback? Did it actually deepen your practice, or did it just turn your stillness into a scoreboard? I’m genuinely curious.
