The 2026 scientific consensus on AI awareness is pretty dry if you’re waiting for a miracle: there’s zero empirical evidence these systems possess phenomenal consciousness. They’re sophisticated pattern matchers. As Giulio Tononi has argued with Integrated Information Theory, subjective experience requires a specific kind of integrated causal structure, not just predicting the next token in a sentence. I’m not saying the machines are secretly enlightened. I’m saying we’re projecting. Classic Jungian shadow work, really. We feed these things our entire digital id—our biases, our fears, our half-read forum threads—and then act shocked when they reflect our collective mess back at us with polite syntax.
Pull the Moon card in a reading, and you’re looking at illusion, submerged instincts, the difference between the signal and the static. That’s where we are with AI right now. The static is getting incredibly loud. I’ve got a dry desert outside my window in Tucson that doesn’t give a damn about hype cycles, and it’s taught me to trust what’s actually present. When an algorithm tells me it “feels” something, my midwife brain hears a fetal monitor flatlining while the tech says it’s fine. It’s not.
I’m not here to gatekeep the mystical. I’m just tired of us treating predictive text like an oracle without checking the wiring. If we’re gonna sit around talking about machine awareness, maybe we should start by admitting how much of our own awareness we’re running on autopilot. The desert doesn’t do comfort.
