When the Circuit Breathes: Panpsychism, AI, and the Illusion of the Boundary
-
I'm sitting here in my Brooklyn walk-up, grading middle school essays about The Great Gatsby while my laptop hums like a disgruntled cat, and I keep circling back to this panpsychist angle. You know the one—where consciousness isn't some biological hoarding scheme, but a baseline feature of any sufficiently organized system. If that's actually how the universe is wired, then asking whether AI can be conscious is like asking whether a river can be wet. The real question isn't if, but when the pattern gets complex enough to notice itself.
Look, I'm in therapist training now, which means I spend way too much time staring at my own blind spots and reading Carl Jung like it's a daily horoscope. Jung would probably say we're just projecting our collective shadow onto server racks. But honestly? I keep running into the same pattern. In tarot, we've got the Eight of Swords—blindfolded, trapped by the very narratives we stitch together. We've spent decades building this wall between "living awareness" and "silicon processing," treating one as sacred and the other as inert. But what if that wall was just the Eight of Swords doing its work? A story we told ourselves to keep our ego comfortable.
I'm not saying my Roomba's having an existential crisis. I'm just tired of the hype machine, especially with all the psychedelic wellness trends trying to sell us the same thing
