I teach here in Chicago, but my background is in software development. I stumbled into consciousness studies years ago while wrestling with AI ethics, and lately, I’ve been sitting with a heavy feeling that keeps surfacing in both spaces. We’re watching entire professions—developers, writers, analysts, even educators—watch their life’s work get automated. The headlines call it an economic disruption. I keep thinking it’s something way deeper. It’s a collective spiritual crisis.

When you spend twenty years identifying as a "builder" or a "creator," and suddenly the tools you trust start doing the heavy lifting on their own, something fractures. It’s not just about paychecks. It’s about identity. Carl Jung wrote about how much of our psychological stability rests on the archetypal roles we adopt. Strip away the Worker archetype without a clear transition, and you’re left with what feels like spiritual vertigo. I’ve seen it in my students, and honestly, I feel it in myself. The cognitive dissonance is real when your daily grind suddenly feels hollow.

AI can optimize, predict, and generate. But it can’t automate meaning. Meaning isn’t a dataset; it’s a relationship. That’s why I’ve been leaning into panpsychism lately. It’s not a mystical detour for me—it’s actually the most honest philosophical framework I’ve found for understanding why consciousness feels so fundamentally tied to purpose. If awareness is woven into the fabric of reality, then meaning isn’t something we manufacture. It’s something we participate in.

In the Tarot, this exact moment screams The Hanged Man. It’s not about suffering. It’s about suspension. The figure hangs upside down not to be punished, but to see the world from a completely different angle. We’re being forced into that inverted perspective right now. The old career ladders are dissolving, and we’re being asked to find value in presence, in community, in the actual flow of energy rather than just output metrics.

I’m trying to treat this less like a market correction and more like a collective initiation. I’ve been leaning into energy work and local community circles to ground myself, because you can’t debug a meaning crisis. Has anyone else felt this shift as a spiritual unraveling rather than just a tech disruption? How are you navigating the suspension?
