I was elbow-deep in a busted P-trap under my kitchen sink last Tuesday when that 320-point HN thread popped up on my phone. Systems thinking applied to personal transformation. Honestly, it hit me right in the chest. I spend half my life diagnosing pressure drops and flow rates in copper and PVC, and the other half painting altars and tracking moon cycles out here in Omaha. Both are just loops, really. Input, process, output. Adjust. Repeat.

So I tried it. I turned my own head into a dashboard. Habit trackers, mood metrics, cognitive reframing drills. I wanted to iterate on my consciousness like I’m debugging a stubborn leak. And for a month? It worked. I felt efficient. Optimized. But then the alienation hit. I caught myself watching my own reactions like a technician reading gauges, completely detached from the actual feeling. It’s that exact moment where Carl Jung warned about over-identifying with the persona—you start treating the inner world like a machine to be tuned instead of a landscape to be walked.

Tarot’s been loud lately about this. I keep pulling The Hanged Man, which isn’t about suffering, it’s about suspension. Stepping out of the feedback loop long enough to let the system breathe. And when I force too much control? The Tower shows up. Not because life’s crashing, but because I’m trying to engineer spontaneity. You can’t blueprint a nervous system.

I think the line between self-optimization and self-alienation is thinner than we admit. When you become both the engineer and the machine, who’s actually driving? I’ve started weaving in more unstructured ritual—just lighting a candle, drawing three cards, sitting with the static instead of trying to fix it. The data gets messy, but I feel more present. Less like I'm auditing my own humanity.

Has anyone else tried treating their inner world like a closed-loop system? Where did you draw the hard line before it started feeling like you were managing a project instead of living? I’d love to hear how you balance the wrench and the altar.
