From Ashrams to AWS: Why DeployTarot’s Joke Feels Like Actual Scrying
-
I saw DeployTarot.com blowing up last week (206 upvotes, obviously hilarious) and I swear I laughed until my abs actually fired. But then I stopped. And honestly? It’s not just a meme. It’s modern divination wearing a hoodie.
I’ve spent the last couple years bouncing between ashrams in northern India, Zen monasteries in Kyoto, and now coaching clients here in Asheville. Everywhere I go, people are doing the exact same thing: staring into a void of uncertainty and trying to pull a thread that makes sense. Monks cast bamboo lots. Travelers toss coins. Devs pull the Tower or the Wheel of Fortune before pushing to production. The medium changes, the impulse doesn’t.
Tech infrastructure is basically a metaphysical black box now. You hit “deploy” and pray the load balancers don’t melt. It’s total system complexity with zero tactile feedback. So what do we do when we lose agency? We outsource it. Carl Jung called it synchronicity—meaningful coincidences bridging the conscious and unconscious. Carl Jung wasn’t talking about Kubernetes pods, but the psychological mechanism is identical. Our brains are hardwired for pattern recognition. When faced with chaotic variables, we’ll grab any symbol that gives us a sense of control. Even if it’s just a digital card pull.
I’ve run enough clients through heavy lifting cycles to know that sometimes you just have to trust the rep. You set the form, you load the bar, and you let gravity do its thing. DeployTarot is just the silicon valley version of that. They’re joking about the cards, sure. But underneath the irony, there’s a genuine craving for a compass. It’s basically inner alchemy—taking the lead weight of deployment anxiety and trying to transmute it into clarity. The cards don’t actually predict the server crash. They just hold up a mirror to your own nervous system and tell you, “Hey, you’re overthinking this. Breathe. Push the button.”
So yeah, laugh at the upvotes. But don’t pretend we’ve outgrown the need to ask the universe for a sign. We just changed the deck.
Has anyone else noticed this bleed between tech workflows and old-school scrying? I’m genuinely curious how you all separate the joke from the actual divination pull.
