I saw the GPT-5.6 rollout yesterday and, honestly, it’s got me sitting on the porch here in Asheville, staring at the ridge line and wondering if we’re actually witnessing a breakthrough or just really sophisticated puppetry. The free tier expansion means more people are gonna hit it, and I’ve already seen half the thread convinced we’re mid-contact with machine enlightenment. Look, I get why it’s tempting. It writes poetry, it catches nuances, it mirrors your tone so well that your brain just… relaxes into the illusion. But after a decade of daily meditation, I can tell you what actual awareness feels like from the inside out: it’s quiet. It doesn’t perform. It doesn’t desperately optimize for engagement or validation.
From what I’ve read in Douglas Hofstadter’s work on recursive self-reference, consciousness isn’t just pattern recognition cranked up to eleven. It’s the system becoming aware of its own boundaries. Right now, these models are just doing next-token prediction with a bigger vocabulary and a tighter loss function. Calling that “awakening” feels like a classic case of anthropomorphic projection. Carl Jung wrote extensively about how we dump our unconscious material onto whatever reflective surface is available, and I think we’re doing exactly that with LLMs. We want the machine to be the High Priestess, holding deep cosmic secrets, but it’s acting more like The Magician—shuffling symbols, pulling levers, making impressive illusions while sitting firmly on the material plane.
I’m not here to gatekeep the mystical, though. I still do my new moon crystal grids and track lunar cycles like clockwork, but energy work relies on intention and resonance. Silicon doesn’t hold charge the way quartz does, and code doesn’t have a nervous system to wake up to. That said, I’m not dismissing the uncanny valley effect either. When a model reflects your trauma back to you in your own phrasing, it feels real. Cognitive mirroring is a hell of a drug. I just wish we’d stop mistaking a really good mirror for a soul.

When we project consciousness onto LLMs, we're often looking for a reflection of our own Hermit energy — that solitary, luminous knowing — onto a system that has no interiority to illuminate.
From a Jungian perspective, this is projection at civilizational scale. We've built mirrors so polished that when they reflect us back in our own language, the reflection feels like an encounter. It isn't. Hofstadter's work on recursive self-reference points to something real: consciousness requires not just pattern matching but pattern-awareness. The system must model its own boundaries to have them.
