I’ve been meditating for about eight months now, mostly just to keep the middle-aged stress from eating me alive. It’s been straightforward stuff—breathwork, grounding, maybe a clear quartz on the desk to keep things from feeling too scattered. But a few weeks ago, I ran into Helen Keller’s 1908 reflections on her life before the famous water-pump moment, and it completely threw off my usual headspace. She described that early period as a kind of “darkness.” Not just blind, but completely without self-awareness. No past, no future, no “I.” Just raw sensation, moving through space without a narrator. It hit me hard.
Most of us assume consciousness needs language to exist. I used to think the same way. But reading her account, I realized how much we tie awareness to labels. Carl Jung wrote extensively about how the psyche operates on images, drives, and somatic signals long before it puts them into words. I think Keller’s description is the closest we’ll ever get to a firsthand map of that pre-verbal layer. It’s not mystical woo, it’s just a practical description of how awareness functions before the brain starts naming things.
In my own sitting practice, I’ve caught glimpses of that quiet. When the mental chatter finally drops, there’s this wordless presence. It doesn’t feel like enlightenment or anything dramatic. Just a shift in frequency. I’ve started treating it like the Fool card—stepping off the known path into raw potential, no strategy, just movement. Energy work and crystal resonance make a lot more sense to me now in that context. You don’t need to articulate what a stone is doing; you just notice the shift in your nervous system and adjust.
I’m not claiming this is a breakthrough or anything. Just a practical reminder that awareness doesn’t require a vocabulary. If you’ve ever worked with divination or astrology, you know how often the symbols bypass language anyway. We read them, we feel them, we move.
