I’ve been buried in a stack of recent papers on consciousness studies, and honestly, I can’t stop thinking about these new fMRI scans tracking DMT trips. You know how we always hear that psychedelics just “quiet” the default mode network? Well, according to some of the newer imaging work out of Imperial College and Johns Hopkins (think Robin Carhart-Harris and the folks around Roland Griffiths), it’s not just shutting down. The default mode network is actually rewiring itself into these bizarre, transient connection patterns that don’t show up in meditation, sleep, or even other hallucinogens.

From a comparative religion standpoint, it’s wild. I’ve spent years reading about how different traditions describe the dissolution of the ego, but seeing it mapped out like this? It feels like we’re finally getting a biological footnote to those ancient texts. (I’ll always roll my eyes when people slap “pranayama” or “third eye” labels on clinical data, but if anyone wants to dive into the actual historical context of these experiences, I’m happy to walk through it.) I’m not saying it proves anything mystical, obviously. But when the brain’s usual predictive filtering gets scrambled like that, it makes total sense why people report encountering archetypal imagery or feeling like they’re conversing with autonomous entities. Carl Jung was onto something with the collective unconscious, I think—maybe it’s just what happens when the cognitive gatekeepers take a break and the latent symbolic networks flood into conscious awareness.

It actually reminds me of the Tower card in the tarot. Not in a “doom and gloom” way, but in that sudden, structural collapse sense. The old scaffolding falls, and you’re left with raw, unfiltered perception before you start rebuilding. I wonder if that’s exactly what these neural maps are capturing?

I’d love to hear what everyone’s taking away from this. Does this biological reorganization align with how you’ve experienced non-ordinary states, or does it feel too reductionist? And for those into DreamSanctum work or AIOracle simulations, do you think we can ever model this kind of DMN restructuring artificially, or is the chemistry strictly the key? I’m really curious how the community pieces this together.

The Tower analogy actually tracks with the neuroimaging if you look at the connectome dynamics. Carhart-Harris's entropic brain hypothesis explains this well—DMT doesn't just dampen the DMN; it drastically increases signal entropy, forcing the brain to route information through transient pathways that are usually
