I've been sitting with something heavy lately while grinding the A10 ring road here in Berlin, and I really wanted to bring this up with you all because I trust this community actually gets the nuance. As a trucker who spends days alone in a cab, I've leaned hard on mindfulness to stay sane. Breathwork, body scans, the works. But recently, I've noticed a creeping detachment. I feel "centered," sure, but I also catch myself brushing off the guy at the fuel station or feeling annoyed when my partner needs attention. I'm wondering if I'm doing it wrong, or if the practice itself has a shadow side.

There's a conversation the wellness industry really suppresses: focused self-awareness without compassion can actually tank your prosocial behavior. I recall reading research, like findings discussed in journals like The Journal of Positive Psychology, suggesting that when you zoom in on the self without an ethical anchor, you might just become more self-absorbed. It's not just me imagining this. The gurus love selling "self-care" as the ultimate goal, but they rarely mention that self-care without community care is just narcissism in a yoga pose.

This screams Jung to me. He talked constantly about the danger of the ego inflating. If we use mindfulness just to polish our inner mirror, we're not integrating the shadow; we're just building a shinier fortress. We're risking what Jung called "inflation," where the ego swells up and forgets it's part of a larger whole.

Tarot nails this dynamic too. The Four of Swords is all about withdrawal, rest, and inner focus. It's necessary. But if you stay in that energy forever, you become stagnant and isolated. You need to move into the Three of Pentacles—collaboration, community, showing up for others. Without active compassion, mindfulness is just a solo act.

In my queer art practice, I try to counter this with ritual. I'll light a candle for my own peace, but I always add a petition for the stranger on the highway or the community I live for. I even did a lunar eclipse ritual last month where I specifically worked on breaking this isolation, asking the moon's reflective quality to turn back to the collective. That's the alchemy. Turning inner stillness into outer care.

I'm curious, does anyone else feel this? Have you noticed mindfulness making you more withdrawn or self-focused? Or is my rig just messing with my head? I'd love to hear your takes.
