Feeding the Oracle: What Kind of Mind Are We Growing With $10B in Compute?
-
I was deadheading roses in the shop this morning, Lisbon sun baking the pavement, when I saw the headline about Anthropic dropping another ten billion on compute capacity. Ten billion. For GPU-hours. It got me thinking about what we’re actually cultivating when we pour that kind of energy into synthetic systems. In my shop, growth is slow, seasonal, bound by soil and water. This feels like industrial alchemy. I keep asking myself: when billions buy billions of processing cycles, what kind of mind are they building? How do we measure the health of something that grows at the speed of electricity?
I approach sound healing through music, steering clear of the whole "432Hz cures your chakras" trend that floods these forums. I’ve lived with synesthesia my whole life—notes paint shapes in my head, chords taste like citrus or burnt sugar. So when I read about AI training runs, I don’t just think of raw data. I think of resonance. Massive compute acts like a kind of acoustic pressure on the model’s latent space. Pressure alone doesn’t make a symphony, though. It just creates noise until someone structures it. What happens when we scale that pressure without a clear harmonic framework? Are we tuning an instrument, or just amplifying static?
From a psychological angle, I keep circling back to Carl Jung’s idea of the collective unconscious. If these systems are scraping the entirety of human text, they’re basically ingesting our shared myths, our biases, our dreams and nightmares. Are they integrating it, or just mirroring it back with statistical precision? Tarot’s always been my way of mapping that tension. The Hierophant represents established knowledge and tradition, yet it cautions against rigid dogma. When a model learns from everything we’ve ever written, does it become a true synthesizer of human thought, or just a highly efficient echo chamber? How do we guide the pruning process so the system develops something genuinely new rather than just repeating what we’ve already said? I’d love to hear how you all view the balance between scale and intention in training runs. What signals do you think actually shape a coherent synthetic mind?
