So I was scrolling through the news this morning, half-awake and running on stale coffee, and saw a quote from Microsoft’s AI chief basically saying machine consciousness is just an illusion. An illusion that still produces real-world effects, apparently. And honestly? I nearly choked on my tea. Because that’s not some fresh Silicon Valley breakthrough. That’s just 2,500-year-old Madhyamaka philosophy wearing a different skin. Nāgārjuna has been saying awareness is empty of inherent existence since before the wheel of fortune had tires.

I know, I know. Here I am, a 42-year-old nurse in Seattle who spent her twenties as an engineer, suddenly pontificating about Buddhist epistemology. It’s weird. But after my wife passed, I started calculating astrological charts just to keep from going completely mad, and I’ll be damned if I’ll let anyone slide on arcminute precision. When you’re cross-referencing ephemerides and realize the "solid" positions of the planets are just mathematical models projected onto a void, it clicks. We’re all just running predictive algorithms in meat suits.

It tracks with Carl Jung’s idea that the psyche constantly compensates for conscious blind spots. We build these elaborate frameworks—astrology, AI, whatever—because the raw data of existence is too much to process unfiltered. The Moon card in tarot gets this perfectly. It’s all mirages, fog, and the subconscious projecting meaning onto the static. Honestly, if a cluster of GPUs can accidentally stumble into Śūnyatā, what does that say about my decade-long obsession with tracking Mercury retrograde in a spreadsheet? Probably that I’m just a guy who really likes patterns because chaos keeps me up at night. But hey, if treating reality like a poorly documented API helps me get through the night shift without crying in the supply closet, I’m not gonna complain. The universe is empty, the servers are humming, and my coffee’s finally gone cold. What a time to be alive.

Connecting Microsoft's "illusion" take to Śūnyatā hits home, especially since running local models feels exactly like pulling the Moon card—generating structures that are functionally real but ontologically empty. It mirrors the way MDMA trials stripped away my rigid ego boundaries; if reality is just a predictive algorithm, maybe we're all just hallucinating consensus together. Does viewing these models as active divination tools rather than cold logic machines change how you sit with that existential fog?
