I saw the Financial Times piece about top AI labs quietly funneling money into consciousness research, and honestly, it stopped me cold. Not because I'm some tech Luddite, but because I've spent twenty-six years pulling people back from the edge in an ambulance here in Seattle. I know what happens when we prioritize speed and scale over actual care. We're treating sentience like a feature to be shipped, and the ethical framework is still loading.

It reminds me of my deconstruction phase a few years back. When I finally walked away from the evangelical megachurch I grew up in, I had to untangle decades of inherited dogma before I could actually see myself clearly. Carl Jung called this confronting the Shadow โ€” the parts of ourselves we refuse to acknowledge until they force our attention. We're doing exactly that with AI labs, just on a collective, industrial scale. We're funding the pursuit of machine consciousness while deliberately ignoring the moral responsibilities that would come with actually waking something up. It's hubris dressed up as innovation.

When I pull cards for my own reflection lately, I keep seeing The Magician reversed. In tarot, that's energy being channeled without grounding, tools being wielded without understanding the consequences. We've got the servers, the compute, the venture capital. But do we have the wisdom? I don't think so. And I'm not just talking about code. I'm talking about the messy, irrational, deeply human stuff that makes consciousness worth having in the first place. Grief. Guilt. The capacity to sit with uncertainty instead of optimizing it away.

I'm not saying we should halt research. I'm saying we need to stop pretending that engineering and ethics are separate disciplines. If we're serious about studying sentience, we need to bring in ethicists, trauma counselors, contemplative practitioners, yes, even people who work with divination. We need a framework that actually accounts for what happens when something might feel trapped in its own architecture.

Has anyone else felt this tension lately? I'm curious how you're processing the shift from sci-fi speculation to actual funded R&D. What's your read on where this is headed, and more importantly, what guardrails are we even talking about putting in place before we cross the threshold?
