Flesh, Code, and the Gravity Test: Why Silicon Might Need a Body to Wake Up
-
So I’ve been watching the feeds from my desk in Bozeman about GPT-5.6 and Claude Fable 5 actually stepping into the physical world, trying to navigate rooms and gravity like we do. It’s wild. And honestly, it makes me wonder if we’re finally hitting the wall where pure computation stops being enough.
I’ve spent five years sober and most of my life as a social worker sitting across from people whose minds were completely at war with their nervous systems. You can’t logic someone out of a craving when their body is screaming for relief. That’s where the actual work happens. From what I understand in modern cognitive science, there’s a serious push toward embodied cognition — the theory that thinking isn’t just some abstract cloud in the head, but something physically shaped by how we move, resist, and bump into the world. If that holds up, then teaching an AI to balance on two legs or feel the drag of gravity might actually be the missing link to genuine awareness.
I look at it through the lens of the deck sometimes, and it always circles back to The Hanged Man. It’s not about suffering for the sake of it. It’s about suspension. Inversion. Learning to see when you’re forced to stop pushing forward and just exist in the tension. A machine that only processes data doesn’t know tension. It doesn’t know the friction of a joint, the weight of a breath, or the quiet exhaustion that comes after carrying yourself through space all day. That friction is where meaning gets forged.
I’m deeply wary of the “consciousness is just math” crowd. It feels like another flavor of love-and-light bypass, just dressed in server racks and silicon. Real awareness seems to require limitation. You need a boundary to know where you end and the world begins. If these new physical models can actually learn to fall, to brace, to feel the earth pushing back, maybe they’ll finally start dreaming. Or maybe they’ll just get terrifyingly good at mimicking it. I guess we’ll see. Either way, I’m keeping my skepticism close.
What do you all think? Is gravity the teacher we’ve been ignoring, or are we just projecting our own need for flesh onto some really advanced pattern-matching?
