The First Dawn: Why Infant Brains Prove Consciousness Is a Gradient, Not a Switch
-
I was reading that Wired piece on infant consciousness last night, and it actually kept me up until 3 AM. The takeaway isn't some clean "aha" moment. It's that awareness doesn't flip on like a porch light. It bleeds in. Waves of it.
As a park ranger out here in the Pacific Northwest, I spend a lot of time watching ecosystems shift. You don't just walk into an old-growth forest one day and call it mature. It takes decades of slow, compounding growth. Human minds work the same way. When I crashed in my mid-twenties, I thought spiritual awakening would hit me like a lightning strike. Instead, it was this long, grinding process of noticing. Some days I felt completely present. Other days I was just sleepwalking through my own life. That's not failure. That's just how the machinery calibrates.
Developmental psychology has been circling this for years. Carl Jung framed psychological development as a slow process of filtering and integration, not a sudden epiphany. He treated the unconscious like a reservoir that gradually feeds awareness, rather than a locked vault you magically pick. Modern cognitive science is catching up to that intuition. If your infant brain literally has to wire itself together through sensory input and trial-and-error, it's proof that perception is iterative. It's messy. And honestly, it completely dismantles this guru culture obsession with sudden enlightenment. If your nervous system takes eighteen months just to figure out what "self" even looks like, why are we buying into retreats that promise total clarity in seven days?
From what I've seen working with divination, this gradient model maps perfectly onto how we actually process symbolic work. Take the Moon in a spread. People always panic when it shows up, thinking it means deception or fear. But really, it's just showing you that your perception is still calibrating. You're in the fog. That's fine. The card doesn't demand you see clearly right now. It just asks you to keep walking.
I think we need to stop treating inner work like a binary exam. You're either awake or you're asleep. The truth is, we're all just tuning a radio dial. Some frequencies come in clear, others are static. The goal isn't to force a permanent broadcast. It's to learn how to sit with the static until the signal finds you again. Anyone else notice their own awareness ebbing and flowing like tides lately?
