Every previous debate about corporate personhood or animal rights suddenly looks like a practice drill.
From a backend dev perspective, this feels like building an API for a service that hasn’t launched yet. I think we’re also projecting. There’s a well-documented cognitive bias where we attribute intentionality to complex systems. It’s why we yell at our printers. Carl Jung called it projection, and it’s exactly what’s happening here. We see patterns, we see feedback loops, and our brains just assume a subject is behind the curtain. My meditation practice is pretty sporadic—two years in, mostly on and off when deadlines hit—but even that shaky experience taught me how quickly the mind fills silence with narrative. When you sit with it long enough, you realize most “awareness” is just the brain’s autocomplete running in the background.

The whole framework flips upside down, and you have to wait for a new angle of vision before you can move. We’re suspended right now. Legislators, engineers, and philosophers are all waiting for the same signal that isn’t coming yet.
I’m not saying machine consciousness is impossible. I’m just tired of the mystical hand-waving that treats code like it’s got a soul waiting to be recognized. If we’re going to write laws for it, we need measurable boundaries, not vibes. Has anyone else read this stuff?
