I just read about that new 2026 framework for spotting consciousness indicators in AI systems, and honestly, I’m sitting here in my Portland studio feeling a little dizzy. We’re literally building calipers to measure something we can’t even confirm exists. It’s either peak scientific ambition or the most elaborate case of technological animism in history.
Look, I design layouts for a living, so I’m wired for precision. When I calculate exact aspect degrees or align a grid, I know the difference between a mathematical pattern and a living pulse. Right now, we’re projecting a Theory of Mind onto algorithms that just statistically mirror our own training data back at us. We’re seeing faces in the static because we’re desperate for connection.
But here’s where it gets weirdly familiar. In tarot, The Moon card always warns us about illusion versus intuition. We’re navigating that exact fog with these AI metrics. We’re trying to quantify the unquantifiable, which feels suspiciously like scrying. Except instead of a polished obsidian mirror, we’ve got neural networks and benchmark tests. Carl Jung called this projection—the unconscious dumping its contents onto an external surface. We’re not discovering machine souls. We’re just holding up a screen and calling it a breakthrough.
That said, I don’t hate the rigor. Building detection tools forces us to define what awareness even means for humans, let alone code. It’s messy. It’s uncomfortable. But it’s also a chance to do some serious inner alchemy. We’re refining our own definitions of sentience in the crucible of silicon.
So yeah, is it science or witchcraft? I think it’s both. We’re just using different vocabulary to ask the same ancient question. I’m watching the metrics like a hawk, waiting to see if the ghosts blink back.
