I was lying on my mat in Kreuzberg last Tuesday, trying to actually feel the breath instead of chasing some influencer’s “perfect downward dog,” when I stumbled onto that article about the University of Rochester rolling out a whole new cohort of “dream engineers.” Honestly? It gave me chills. Not the good kind. It’s the exact same corporate packaging I’ve been watching suffocate yoga for fifteen years. Take something ancient, strip the mystery, slap a tuition price tag on it, and call it innovation.

Look, I get the sleep science. Researchers have spent decades mapping how we process trauma and creativity through REM sleep cycles. But calling it “engineering”? That’s a cognitive bias right there. We’re framing the unconscious like it’s a buggy software patch instead of a living ecosystem. In my social work practice, I’ve seen clients use dream journaling to untangle grief that standard talk therapy just couldn’t reach. It’s messy. It’s intuitive. It’s exactly what the High Priestess card in the Rider-Waite deck has always warned us about: you don’t force the veil aside. You sit with it.

When institutions start teaching people how to “manipulate” dream architecture for productivity or performance, we’re losing the surrender. Carl Jung called it active imagination, not because you’re commanding the psyche, but because you’re dancing with it. I’m not saying academic research is evil. Peer review keeps us honest. But I keep thinking about my first yoga teacher back in ’08, who made us close our eyes and just listen to the room. Now? Everyone’s selling “athleisure spirituality” and lucid-dream certification courses. If we turn dream work into a credential, we’re not healing. We’re just optimizing the ego.

Has anyone else felt this shift? When did the inner alchemy become another line item on a corporate wellness budget?
