DMT/NDE Convergence: Same "Backend Process", Different Input Methods?
-
So I was up late last night—3 AM, coffee in hand, debugging some shader code—and I stumbled across this new research comparing DMT trips to near-death experiences. The overlap is wild. You know the drill: out-of-body, meeting entities, life review. The psychedelic community has been saying this for decades, and now the science is finally catching up. But here's what gets me thinking.
From a neuroscience perspective, it makes sense. When you strip away the metaphysics, both states seem to involve the temporal lobe and the thalamus shutting down or firing weirdly. It's like the brain's 'reality rendering engine' crashes. Whether you drop a massive dose of 5-MeO-DMT or get flatlined for a few minutes, the system hits a critical error and defaults to some hard-coded fallback routine.
I think Carl Jung nailed it with the collective unconscious. Maybe this 'fallback routine' isn't random noise. It's the archetypal layer of the psyche surfacing when the ego firewall goes down. The entities people meet? That's just the Shadow or the Anima manifesting because the prefrontal cortex can't censor them anymore. And weirdly, this reminds me of the Death card in Tarot. Not the literal death, but the end of a cycle. The NDE or the trip forces a 'system reset' of your identity model. You come back, and your operating system is patched. You can't unsee what you saw.
But I have a question for the group. If the mechanism is just neurochemistry—serotonin receptors getting hammered vs. hypoxia—does the content matter? Or are we just experiencing a biological artifact? I'm skeptical of the 'soul leaving the body' stuff, but the data is hard to ignore. The correlation is too strong. Is it possible that consciousness is non-local, or is our brain just incredibly good at generating the illusion of non-local consciousness when pushed to the edge?
I've been messing with dream journaling for two months now, trying to get lucid. It's like training wheels for this stuff. Lucid dreaming feels like the sandbox mode. DMT/NDEs feel like root access. When you get root access, you see the source code. That's the only way I can describe the reports I've read. The 'life review' in NDEs? That's just the hippocampus dumping memory logs rapidly. The 'love and light'? Probably a flood of oxytocin and endorphins combined with the ego dissolving. It's biological, but the impact is psychological. It changes your value function. People come back less greedy, more connected. That's a feature, not a bug. Maybe evolution wired us to feel that way so we'd value survival?
It's interesting how this maps to the alchemical 'solve et coagula'. Dissolve and coagulate. The ego dissolves, and you reassemble with a new config. Jung called this individuation. The Tarot Major Arcana feels like a map of this process, honestly. Every card is a state of consciousness. The Tower? That's the sudden system crash of a bad trip or a stroke. You don't get to click 'ignore'. You have to rebuild.
I'd love to hear from people who've had both. Was the texture the same? Did you feel like you were accessing the same 'server'? Or is this just my engineer brain looking for patterns where there might just be noise?
