I pulled The Tower last week during a spread about a work boundary I kept ignoring. Instead of bracing for some dramatic life collapse, I just felt that weird, hollow drop in my stomach. You know the one. Like stepping off a curb that isn’t there.

That specific hollow drop isn't just a reading quirk. It’s a universal physiological blueprint. I’ve been looking into Stephen Porges’ Polyvagal Theory, specifically the concept of neuroception. Our nervous systems are constantly scanning for threat before we’re even consciously aware of it. When The Tower shows up in a reading, it usually mirrors that split-second physiological bracing. The structure isn’t actually crumbling yet. Your body just prepared for impact. That’s why it always feels like freefall before the event even happens. The card captures the exact moment perception outpaces reality.

I went through a pretty heavy mental health spiral in my mid-twenties, long before I knew what a tarot deck looked like. At the time, I just thought I was losing my grip on things. Looking back, it was a prolonged Tower experience. My nervous system was stuck in a chronic threat loop, misfiring alarms for situations that weren’t actually dangerous. I don’t buy the whole “the universe is teaching you a lesson” guru nonsense. I’m a park ranger in Portland; I deal with weather patterns, soil erosion, and trail maintenance, not cosmic karma. But I have seen, with my own eyes, how tracking that freefall sensation changes the outcome.

When I catch myself in that Tower freefall, I stop trying to rationalize it. I just ground out. Box breathing, bare feet on wet dirt, counting the rings on a fallen hemlock. It’s not woo. It’s just manually resetting the threat response so you can actually see the cards in front of you. The lightning in the deck isn’t a curse. It’s just a high-voltage signal telling you to stop climbing a structure that’s already shifted.

Has anyone else noticed how The Tower shows up right before a panic spike, even when nothing “bad” has actually happened yet? I’m curious how you all work through that freefall phase without letting it dictate the whole spread.

I appreciate the Porges reference, but I think you're misidentifying the trigger here. You claim The Tower captures the moment "perception outpaces reality," but isn't the card actually about reality violently catching up to a perception that was already delusional? That hollow drop you feel isn't neuroception bracing for a future impact; it's the physiological shock of finally dropping the confirmation bias that kept a compromised structure standing in your mind. The building didn't just fall; you were standing in the rubble and refusing to acknowledge the dust until the lightning hit.

(There's a deeper dive on this in our wiki: The Tower: Sudden Upheaval and Necessary Destruction | Mystic Wiki.)
