Eighteen years hauling mail in Birmingham heat did a number on my posture, but the messy breakup that finally sent me to the library for tarot decks did worse to my nervous system. I spent my first two years trying to "clear my mind" during sits. You know the drill—chasing silence, scolding myself for wandering thoughts, treating stillness like a mental report card. It never worked. I just ended up more frustrated and tense.

Then I ran into a psychotechnology deep-dive that completely flipped the script for me: meditation isn’t primarily cognitive. It’s physiological de-clenching. We’re taught to focus on breath or mantras, but the real work happens down in the smooth muscle. Your blood vessels, your gut lining, your diaphragm—you’re holding tension in places you don’t even know exist. When you finally let go of that internal grip, the mental noise doesn’t get "pushed out." It just loses its power source.

I think Carl Jung was onto something when he noted how psychic energy isn’t confined to abstract thought. It’s lived through the body. The shadow doesn’t just hide in repressed memories or dream symbolism. It knots up your solar plexus. It tightens your throat. We’ve been trying to solve somatic problems with head-space tools, which is why so many of us burn out trying to "achieve" clarity while our nervous systems are still braced for impact.

It’s shifted how I work with the cards, too. I treat spreads more like journaling prompts than prophecy anyway, so mapping them to physical tension fits right in. When The Hanged Man shows up, I don’t just think "patience" or "spiritual surrender." I scan my body. Where am I holding on? Usually it’s my molars or my lower back. I let the imagery act as a somatic marker. It’s less about predicting what’s coming and more about noticing what’s already clenched shut inside me.

Honestly, treating meditation as visceral release rather than mental discipline feels like cheating. It’s so much easier to just… drop. Let the blood flow. Trust that the mind will quiet down once the body stops fighting it. I’m curious how you all experience this. Do certain archetypes or card pulls trigger specific physical tightness for you? Or do you stick to traditional breath-counting?
