I’ve been watching this trend roll through my feed for a while now, and honestly, it’s equal parts fascinating and exhausting. I’m 22, working as a line chef in Omaha, but I spent my early twenties backpacking through ashrams in Kerala, meditation caves in Myanmar, and forest monasteries in Thailand. I’ve seen what actual contemplative practice looks like. It’s quiet. It’s repetitive. It doesn’t come with a matching aesthetic or a 15-second hook. So when I see teens ordering $40 tarot decks and geode clusters just to film a “read” for TikTok, I can’t help but wonder: is this a genuine cultural shift, or just the algorithm monetizing a generation’s anxiety?
I think it’s both, but the algorithm is definitely the packaging. What we’re really seeing is a massive, unfiltered hunger for meaning. Teens are growing up in a world that feels increasingly unstable, and the human brain just isn’t wired to sit with that kind of chaos without trying to make sense of it. Carl Jung wrote extensively about how archetypes surface when we’re culturally adrift, acting as psychological scaffolding during collective stress. When I look at what Gen Z is drawn to in the tarot, it’s rarely the Emperor or the Empress. It’s The Moon, The Tower, The Hanged Man. Cards about uncertainty, upheaval, and radical surrender. That tracks. They’re intuitively reaching for symbols that validate their lived experience.
That said, I’ve noticed how social media flattens the actual practice. Tarot isn’t a fortune-telling machine. It’s a mirror. When you rely on an algorithm to tell you which spreads are “viral,” you bypass the introspection. You start falling right into confirmation bias, pulling cards that just echo what you already fear or hope for. Real divination requires sitting with discomfort. I learned that the hard way in a Thai forest monastery where silence was the only teacher. No cards, no crystals, just you and your own mental noise. It’s brutal, but it rewires how you perceive patterns.
I’m not here to gatekeep. If a deck helps a kid feel less alone tonight, that’s valid.
