I saw that thread blow up on HN last night—sixty-something points, everyone dissecting how ancient philosophy might actually be the antidote to tech alienation. Honestly? I’m nodding along from my couch in Bozeman, watching the snow fall while my laptop pings with another AI-generated newsletter. It’s weird how Aristotle’s whole framework for eudaimonia is getting dragged back into the spotlight right when Silicon Valley hits another existential wall. If we’re looking at it, no amount of predictive text or generative models can answer what actually makes a life worth living. They can optimize for engagement, sure. But can they really cultivate character?

I’ve been reading a lot of Watts lately, and he always pushed that we’re not separate observers stuck inside meat suits. We’re the whole process. Doesn’t that land harder when you’re staring at screens that literally fragment your attention into micro-dopamine hits? Aristotle seems to point toward the same thing—you don’t flourish by outsourcing your reflection to an app. You do it through habit, community, and deliberate practice. Carl Jung called it individuation, right? It’s that slow, often uncomfortable integration of the shadow so you stop projecting your unlived life onto whatever the latest tech trend promises to fix. I’m just wondering how much of our current burnout comes from skipping that inner work entirely.

Tarot’s been mirroring this for me, too. I keep pulling The Hermit and The Hanged Man during my moon rituals, which feels less like coincidence and more like a gentle nudge to step back from the noise. The Hermit doesn’t wander into the dark to escape; he goes in to find his own lantern. Doesn’t that align with Aristotle’s emphasis on practical wisdom (phronesis)? You can’t download it. You have to live it, stumble through it, and talk about it with other humans who aren’t optimizing for metrics. I guess what’s getting under my skin is how we keep treating ancient frameworks like vintage software we can just “update” and run. They’re not tools. They’re mirrors. Crowley tried to turn mysticism into a power trip, which always struck me as fundamentally backwards—spiritual work isn’t about bypassing the human experience, is it? It’s about sitting with it until it alchemizes.

How are you all balancing the digital noise with actual grounding practice? Do you find that returning to older texts helps you untangle the algorithmic fatigue, or does it feel like academic cosplay until you actually live it? I’d love to hear what’s working in your circles.
