I’ve spent half my life in quiet rooms—Oslo’s hushed archives, a misty Himalayan monastery, a dusty ashram outside Rishikesh—watching how people reduce themselves to a single word. “I’m a Scorpio.” “She’s a Libra.” It’s charming, I suppose, until you realize we’re trying to fit an entire forest into a matchbox.
When I first started charting seriously, I kept catching myself doing the exact same thing. I’d meet someone, hear their birthday, and immediately stack a whole personality on top of that one solar placement. It felt like shuffling the Major Arcana but only ever looking at The Fool. Sure, there’s movement, there’s potential, but you’re missing the entire deck. The birth chart is more like a woven tapestry—Moon ruling the tides of your inner weather, Saturn carving out the boundaries you actually respect, Mercury whispering how you process grief. Strip that away, and you’re left with a postcard, not a map.
Carl Jung called it individuation—the slow, often messy work of integrating every fragment of yourself, not just the part that shines easiest. Sun-sign astrology, in my experience, is the shadow of that process. It’s the ego’s favorite shortcut. We grab it because it’s comfortable, because it lets us skip the hard work of sitting with our own contradictions. I’ve sat with retreat guides who’d smile gently at this, pointing out that labeling yourself by one season of the sky is like judging a river by a single ripple.
These days, I still love astrology, but I treat it like a mirror, not a verdict. When I pull cards or cast a chart, I’m not looking for a fixed identity. I’m looking for the weather system. The Sun shows where your vitality burns, yes, but it doesn’t tell you how you love, how you fear, or what you’re running from. That’s in the aspects, the houses, the quiet corners most people skip.

Spot on. I see people clinging to their sun signs like a life raft because staring at the rest of their chart is just too damn hard. When I'm teaching breathwork at the community center, I watch stressed-out parents trying to use a single label to explain away their chaos instead of actually sitting with the discomfort. You can't regulate your nervous system by hiding behind a zodiac sign.
