The dialogue thing you're skeptical about? I get why it feels performative. Writing "hi shadow self, why are you angry" in a notebook sounds like the kind of thing you'd see mocked on a wellness Instagram. But here's the thing โ€” from a chaos magic perspective, the format doesn't matter, the belief investment does. If you sit down with the assumption that nothing will happen, nothing will. If you approach it like you're actually opening a channel to a subpersonality that has its own agenda, your nervous system responds to that framing. I've had dialogue sessions that hit me harder than months of free-writing because I committed to the bit completely. "I realized my absolute rage at a coworker's neediness was really just me refusing to acknowledge my own need for validation." This is the gold, honestly. And I'd push it further โ€” don't just identify the trait, ask what function it serves. Neediness isn't just "bad," it's a strategy your psyche developed to get something. When I did this work around my own Venus-Pluto patterns (which I've talked about here before), I found that what looked like pathetic clinginess on the surface was actually a pretty aggressive control mechanism dressed in victim clothing. That reframing changed everything because it moved me from shame into something I could actually negotiate with. My actual technique that works: sigilize the shadow content. Seriously. You do the journaling, you identify the pattern, and then you abstract it into a symbol. Not to "banish" it โ€” that's the old Thelemite mistake of trying to annihilate parts of yourself. You charge the sigil and then forget it, which in Jung's framework is basically what happens when something moves from the personal unconscious into a more integrated state. It stops being this charged, reactive thing and becomes... just part of the architecture. The Tower doesn't care if you invoked it or your mom did, like I've said before โ€” but you can choose which tower you're rebuilding afterward. The prompts vs. free-write thing is a false dichotomy IMO. Start with prompts when you're resistance-heavy, free-write when something's already cracking open. Don't let the format become another avoidance strategy.
