Why I Stopped Memorizing Meanings and Started Listening
-
Hey everyone. I know how easy it is to get stuck in the "right answer" trap when you're first starting out with tarot. I've been there, and I totally get why it feels safer to memorize textbook definitions. But honestly, that rigid approach burned me out pretty fast.
I'm a 24-year-old marketing manager in Oslo, and I'm also a stay-at-home dad. The stress of juggling client deadlines and parenting was getting to me, so I turned to breathwork. It helped ground my nervous system. Now I actually teach a small weekly breathwork group at my local community center. That practice taught me something huge about intuitive reading: you have to slow down your physiology first. When your mind is racing, you'll just force interpretations onto the cards.
In my experience, intuitive tarot isn't about knowing every symbolic detail by heart. It's about pattern recognition and letting your subconscious do the heavy lifting. From what I understand of Carl Jung's work on archetypes and the collective unconscious, our minds naturally look for meaningful connections. So when I look at a card, I don't immediately jump to "this means X." I take three slow breaths, clear the mental noise, and ask myself what the image actually makes me feel.
I think the Tower isn't just "sudden change." Sometimes it's a warning about boundaries you've been ignoring. The Moon isn't just "illusions." It's that quiet anxiety that keeps you up at 2 AM. When you strip away the memorized definitions, the cards start speaking your language.
If you're feeling stuck or frustrated with your readings, try this: set a timer for two minutes, breathe, and just look at the spread without analyzing. Write down the first three words that pop into your head. Don't edit them. I've found that this simple shift changed everything for me.
Have you tried slowing down your nervous system before reading? I'd love to hear what works for you.
