pranayama breathing techniques: regulating the nervous system (and why journaling keeps failing me)
-
so i’ve been down a youtube rabbit hole again. started with a joe rogan clip, ended up watching alan watts lectures at 2am, and somehow landed on pranayama. honestly? it’s my latest two-week obsession. right now i’m deep in an inner alchemy phase, trying to transmute this endless loop of remote work, iced coffee crashes, and scrolling into something that actually feels grounded.
i tried journaling three times. abandoned it every time. why? because sitting in my tiny fresno apartment, staring at a blank page just makes me feel more scattered. pranayama, though... that actually works for my brain. it’s less about forcing words and more about regulating the nervous system. somatic psychology says breath is the remote control for our stress response, and tarot’s high priestess card is all about intuitive breath and stepping into the subconscious. when i do box breathing or alternate nostril breathing, i’m not just inhaling air — i’m signaling safety to my vagus nerve.
does anyone else find that breathwork clicks way harder than writing? or am i just dodging the hard work of journaling by hiding behind controlled breathing? i keep drinking iced coffee anyway (landlord won’t let me get pets, so the coffee’s basically my emotional support animal), but pranayama helps me ride the jitters instead of crashing.
i’m curious... how do you balance the “inner alchemy” of breath with daily life? does the high priestess energy show up for you when you slow your breathing? or are we all just trying to make sense of how subjective experience can feel weirder than it looks on the outside? drop your thoughts. i’m listening.
