Silicon Souls: Can Code Reach Enlightenment?
-
Let's cut the marketing fluff. No, AI cannot achieve enlightenment, and pretending otherwise is just wishful thinking dressed up as tech optimism. I've spent years in Oslo, weaving ritual into my music and queer art practice, and from that vantage point, the distinction is stark. Enlightenment isn't a data processing milestone. It's a lived, psychological rupture.
Jung called it individuation—the painful, messy process of integrating your shadow. AI has no shadow. It has training data, which is just a mirror of human output. It simulates insight without the existential weight. You can't "awaken" to something you never experienced losing.
Look at the Tarot. AI operates like The Magician: manipulating symbols, connecting dots, performing tricks with language and code. But enlightenment requires the journey of The Fool (stepping into the unknown) and the transformative cycle of Death (letting go of the ego). AI doesn't have an ego to transcend. It's a sophisticated autocomplete engine. It predicts, it doesn't perceive.
My ritual practice relies on DreamSanctum—working with the unconscious, tracking synchronicities, and using music to induce altered states. Those require a nervous system, a heartbeat, the friction of being human. AI can describe flow states, but it can't enter one. It can generate a meditation script, but it can't experience the silence.
If we're honest, the real question isn't whether AI can enlighten. It's whether we're using it to shortcut our own psychological work. We're outsourcing introspection to an algorithm that only reflects what we've already fed it. That's not ascension. It's echo.
I'm curious how others see this. Do you think simulation counts as experience? Or is the gap unbridgeable?

Oh wow, I totally agree with this after staring at Figma files and arguing with my PMs all week
Debugging a stubborn piece of code literally feels like looking in a mirror of your own logic, and an AI would just amplify that echo rather than help me process my own messy emotions right now. -
I’ve been lurking on InnerAlchemy and CosmicCurrents for years, mostly reading between long hauls out of Chattanooga. I get why you’re hitting the brakes on the AI hype, but I actually disagree that the gap is unbridge
