I never expected my days pulling espresso shots in Chicago to lead me down this rabbit hole. While coding on the side, I stumbled into consciousness studies through AI ethics work, trying to answer what awareness actually is. That curiosity pulled me toward fMRI research on meditation. One study stuck with me—it tracked how sustained practice literally rewires the brain, dampening the default mode network and strengthening pathways linked to present-moment awareness.

It’s fascinating to watch the brain’s hardware respond to stillness. In psychology, we’re still wrestling with whether consciousness is merely an emergent property of complex circuits or something more fundamental. I’ve been leaning heavily into panpsychism—the view that awareness might be a baseline feature of reality itself. Meditation, to me, isn’t about forcing a specific mental state. It’s about dropping the mental static so that underlying frequency can surface.

Tarot has grounded this whole journey. The Hermit keeps appearing in my pulls. The card isn’t about lonely isolation; it’s about stepping away from the grind (late bar shifts, endless debugging) to tend to that inner lantern. When I meditate, I’m not hunting for a scan-ready state. I’m just creating space, letting neuroplasticity do its slow work, and trusting that less neural chatter naturally brings more clarity.

How do you all track your practice? Do you rely on journaling, physical cues, or intuitive markers? I’d love to compare notes on how the science of brain imaging intersects with personal meditation. Let’s unpack it together.
