Hi, I'm Lee. I'm fifty-six, living in Nashville, and yes, I'm a college dropout. I couldn't last four years of lectures, so I taught myself philosophy and mysticism the hard way. Now I'm knee-deep in this fascinating overlap of biology and spirit, and I have to share.

Gut microbiome research is blowing my mind. It turns out our "gut feelings" aren't just poetic metaphors. The gut-brain axis is a hardwired biological reality. Psychology refers to this as "Embodied Cognition"—the theory that cognition isn't confined to the brain but is deeply rooted in bodily states. When your microbiome is imbalanced, your spiritual practice gets foggy. Clarity literally depends on your bugs.

I keep circling back to The Hermit card in tarot. It symbolizes inner light, solitude, and deep intuition. But here's the biological twist: that "inner light" is physically tethered to your gut health. If your microbiome is sick, your intuition dims. It's not just mystical; it's physiological.

This connects so well with Alan Watts. He always emphasized the "here and now"—the immediate, unmediated experience of being alive. The gut is the seat of that immediacy. You don't think about digesting; it just is. Crowley, unfortunately, got so lost in his own labyrinthine esoteric systems that he overlooked the simple, visceral truth of the body. I'll take Watts' directness any day.

My perspective? Spiritual well-being isn't some separate realm. Your gut is your second brain. If you're doing moon rituals or divination, check your diet first. Bugs in the belly mean clarity in the spirit.

Honestly, being a dropout meant I had to learn to trust my own instincts without a textbook telling me what to think. That instinct lives in the gut. And Nashville's humidity can really mess with my system, so I'm extra careful with my microbiome.

What do you all think? Have you noticed how your gut health affects your practice?
