I sat down last Tuesday, pen hovering over a blank notebook, and just let my hand move. I didn't force it. I just breathed out and let the ink flow. It’s a technique I leaned on heavily during my first year of sobriety—five years clean now, thanks to long Tucson nights and a lot of quiet reflection. Automatic writing isn’t always about contacting "guides" or "angels," as some corners of this site like to spin it. For me, it’s closer to what Carl Jung called active imagination. You’re not summoning external spirits so much as you’re opening a direct line to your own unconscious. The pen becomes a conduit for the shadow material that doesn’t want to be spoken aloud.

I’m a voice actor by trade, so I’m used to riding the rhythm of language and controlling my breath. When I do automatic writing, I’m not trying to be poetic. I’m just tracking the flow. And honestly? It’s messy. Sometimes the words are fragmented, sometimes they hit you right in the chest. I’ve noticed that when I approach it with that sanitized “love and light” attitude, I actually get worse results. The subconscious doesn’t care about your curated spiritual aesthetic. It wants honesty. If you’re trying to force a pretty narrative, your conscious censor takes over and the channel closes.

In tarot, this process mirrors the Moon card. That archetype isn’t about bright clarity; it’s about the murky, reflective surface of the unconscious. The High Priestess sits right beside it, holding that veil back just enough to let something through. Automatic writing is basically pulling that veil aside. You’re not getting cosmic downloads in a vacuum. You’re wrestling with your own archetypes, cognitive biases, and buried memories.

Has anyone else found that automatic writing works better when you drop the spiritual performance and just let the ugly stuff surface? I’d be curious to hear how you separate genuine intuitive flow from just daydreaming or anxiety spirals. What’s your threshold for knowing it’s actually working?
