I never thought a piece of polished metal would shift my perspective on the world. As a park ranger out here in Lisbon, I spend my days tracking ecological patterns, but lately, I’ve been tracking something else: my own subconscious through a scrying mirror.
My academic background in comparative religion taught me that mirrors aren’t just tools for vanity. In Tibetan Buddhist practices, Greco-Roman divination, and medieval grimoires, the mirror acts as a threshold. I get a little frustrated when modern new age shops strip these rich histories and sell them as quick spiritual fixes, but I’m always happy to dig into the historical context if someone asks.
Psychologically, scrying is basically controlled projection. Carl Jung wrote extensively about the collective unconscious, and when you stare into that dark, reflective surface, you aren’t necessarily seeing an external spirit—you’re seeing your own mind project its hidden archetypes onto the silver. It’s fascinating how the brain craves pattern recognition, turning random visual noise into meaningful symbols.
In Tarot, this perfectly mirrors (pun intended) The Moon card. The Moon represents the subconscious, intuition, and the unknown. The High Priestess also holds a veil, symbolizing hidden knowledge waiting to be uncovered. When I scry, I’m essentially doing what the High Priestess does: pulling back the veil on my own psyche.
