After leaving academia, reading about neural correlates of consciousness (NCC) hits differently. Working with circuits gives me a practical view of signal flow, but the science behind abstract reasoning regions—largely in the prefrontal and parietal cortices—reveals a fascinating tension. Researchers have essentially found the brain's "philosophy hub." But here’s the catch: mapping a neural address isn’t the same as explaining the experience itself. It’s the classic map-territory distinction. You can chart where the signal fires, but the “why” of subjective experience stays stubbornly out of reach.
