Lately, though, I’ve been circling back to something I can’t quite label. What’s pulling me in isn’t dogma—it’s the intersection of evolutionary biology and the old ‘third eye’ metaphor.
A growing body of research suggests the pineal gland evolved from a photosensory organ—essentially, an ancestral eye that migrated into the brain. Studies like those published in Evolutionary Biology (2022) point to vestigial photoreceptors in non-mammalian vertebrates, hinting that our ‘intuition’ might have literal biological roots.
From a psychological standpoint, this aligns with Jung’s concept of the collective unconscious and cognitive theories on intuitive processing. When we feel that sudden ‘gut feeling,’ it’s not magic—it’s rapid pattern recognition rooted in neural pathways that may trace back to those ancestral photoreceptors.
In the tarot, this resonates deeply with The High Priestess. She’s draped in blue, veiled in mystery, standing between two pillars. Traditionally, she represents hidden knowledge and intuition. If the pineal gland was literally an eye, then the ‘veil’ she wears isn’t just symbolic—it’s a nod to the biological reality of sensory evolution. Even The Star card, with its radiant seven-pointed star, mirrors the pineal’s role in circadian rhythms and inner illumination.
