I came across that 2026 meditation report recently—the one saying 75 percent of people are now sitting down for spiritual growth instead of just stress relief—and honestly, it didn’t surprise me. It just felt like someone finally put a name to the quiet shift I’ve been noticing in my own practice, and in the small circles where I gather to read charts with friends.

Back when I first started meditating, it was purely tactical. I was burning out, overstimulated, and just wanted my nervous system to stop screaming. A lot of us started there. It makes sense, too. Jon Kabat-Zinn brought mindfulness into clinical spaces as a coping mechanism, and for years, that’s exactly how we treated it: a spiritual sedative. But lately, the cushion feels different. The breath isn’t just a brake pedal anymore. It’s a doorway.

I think we’re hitting a collective threshold. When you strip away the hustle culture and the constant digital noise, what’s left isn’t just “relaxation.” It’s the raw, unfiltered self. And that’s heavy. Jung talked about how the psyche naturally moves toward wholeness once survival mode drops off, but actually sitting with that process requires real courage. Carl Jung called it individuation, and it’s messy. It’s not about feeling zen. It’s about meeting the shadow without flinching.

Tarot keeps mirroring this for me. Lately, I keep pulling The Hermit and the Four of Swords—not as cards of withdrawal, but as invitations to stop running. The Hermit’s lantern isn’t for reading maps. It’s for seeing what you’ve been avoiding in the dark. When I run lunar rituals or do chart work now, people aren’t asking “will I feel better?” They’re asking “what am I actually becoming?” That’s Inner Alchemy in its purest form. Lead into gold isn’t a metaphor for wealth. It’s about transmuting trauma, numbness, and fatigue into conscious presence.

I wonder if we’re just done outsourcing our peace to apps and breathwork scripts. The culture’s exhausted, and maybe that exhaustion is the exact pressure needed to crack the shell.

Has anyone else felt this pivot in their own practice? When did your meditation stop being a coping mechanism and start feeling like actual soul work? I’m just curious what’s coming up for the rest of you.
