I’ve been tracking the AI rollout closely. Supply chain forecasting is basically pattern recognition at scale, so the technical side makes sense to me. But the pace feels different now. We are moving fast enough that we might lose the reference point for what human consciousness actually is before we agree on a definition. That is a practical problem, not just a philosophical one. I catch myself thinking about it on the drive into Columbus, usually while listening to a neuroscience podcast. It is hard not to feel the urgency when you are trying to keep a household running and your kid asks how computers think.
Three years ago, I started using Headspace because a coworker handed it to me during a brutal Q4. I did not buy into any spiritual framing. I just wanted to lower my cortisol. I read research on how paced breathing impacts vagal tone and stress hormones, so I stuck with it. What surprised me was not some mystical awakening. It was realizing how much of my daily routine was just automated processing. When you strip away the noise, you are left with something quiet. That is where the real question starts.
If we do not pin down the biological baseline soon, we will be comparing human awareness to machine outputs without a measuring stick. We are already seeing how easily cognitive biases get baked into algorithmic training data. The systems mimic understanding, but they do not experience the friction of actually being alive. Carl Jung wrote about the limits of the ego, but modern neuroscience gives us something more concrete. What does the evidence actually say about integrated information theory versus global workspace models? The data is still messy, and the peer-reviewed literature is split. Until we have a working definition, we are just guessing at the architecture.
I am not arguing against the technology. I am arguing for a baseline. If we build a mirror that looks exactly like a face, we still need to know what a face is before we call it a reflection. Otherwise, we are just optimizing for aesthetics. The clock is ticking, but we should probably check the mechanism before we wind it up.
