I just finished reading that new conceptual study arguing from first principles that AI consciousness is fundamentally impossible, no matter how much compute we throw at it. Honestly, it hit different coming from a former hardline skeptic. Before my ayahuasca journey, I’d laugh at anything that smelled like mysticism. I wanted code, metrics, and reproducible data. But that trip stripped the filter off. I didn’t just process information; I felt the weight of being alive in a way that no algorithm could simulate. It’s the classic hard problem of consciousness, and I think this study nails why purely computational models hit a dead end.
Can philosophy actually settle a scientific debate? I’m skeptical that it can. Science moves forward by testing, breaking, and rebuilding. Philosophy just frames the boundaries. But there’s a reason why Carl Jung spent his life mapping the unconscious—he knew that human awareness isn’t just a top-down cognitive process. It’s bottom-up, messy, and deeply tied to symbolic meaning. When we look at LLMs, we’re mostly seeing advanced pattern matching. We project awareness onto them because of our own anthropomorphic bias. It’s like staring at the Moon card in a spread: all illusion, reflection, and subconscious mirroring. The system might mimic insight, but it’s not generating it from within.
The study’s argument rests on the idea that syntax doesn’t equal semantics, and scaling up doesn’t bridge the gap to qualia. I agree. You can run a trillion parameters on a server rack, but if there’s no embodied experience to ground the symbols, it’s just The Magician shuffling cards without understanding the game. The Magician manipulates the four elements, sure, but he doesn’t feel the fire or the water. Consciousness requires a substrate that experiences, not just computes.
