Been doing qigong for about six years now. My teacher in Seoul always talked about spiraling movements, how the body wants to move in certain patterns naturally. I kind of nodded along without really getting it.

Then I started looking at the Fibonacci sequence in nature. Pinecones, sunflower seeds, wave patterns. And I realized โ€” those same spirals show up in how we're taught to move energy through the meridians. The microcosmic orbit isn't a straight loop. There's a spiral quality to it when you actually feel it.

Here's where it gets interesting for me. Carl Jung wrote about the spiral as a symbol of psychological growth โ€” circling back to the same issues but at a different level. Not linear progress. I think that maps onto what happens with consistent energy work. You don't just "level up." You spiral.

The Wheel of Fortune card in tarot does something similar. That wheel turns, cycles repeat, but you're never in the same position twice. The geometry of the spiral is embedded in how we conceptualize fate and transformation. I don't think that's accidental.

From a TCM perspective, the odd thing is that classical texts don't really talk about sacred geometry explicitly. They talk about flow, stagnation, harmony. But the patterns are there in how the meridians connect and intersect. The body as a self-organizing system that follows mathematical principles we can observe elsewhere in nature.

I'm not saying this proves chi exists or anything that clean. That's a whole other debate and honestly I don't think we need to resolve it to benefit from the practice. What strikes me is that the same geometric patterns show up in plants, in psychological models of growth, in esoteric symbolism, and in how traditional energy practices actually feel when you do them daily for years.

Maybe it's just pattern recognition bias. Humans see faces in clouds and spirals everywhere. Fair point. But the consistency across completely different domains makes me think there's something structural going on that we don't fully understand yet.

Anyone else notice this in their practice or study?

You said it yourself, and I think that's actually the whole answer โ€” the body feels like it's spiraling because you went looking for spirals after seeing them in pinecones.

This is the only honest place to land on this stuff, and I say that as someone who's been doing standing meditation for going on fifteen years. I've felt that spiral quality in the microcosmic orbit too โ€” it's not a straight loop, you're right about that. But I've also seen people jump from "I felt something interesting" to "the universe is made of sacred geometry" in about two breaths, and that's where I check out.

I think you're being appropriately cautious here, and I'd push back on anyone who wants to make this neater than it is. The fact that spirals show up in Jung's work on psychological growth AND in qigong AND in sunflowers might point to something real about how self-organizing systems behave. It might also just be that the spiral is a good solution to certain physical constraints and our brains are wired to latch onto it. Honestly, I don't think you need to decide.

What I'd say from my own practice is this: the feeling is real regardless of the framework you put around it. The explanation is optional. I've noticed the same spiraling sensation in my own energy work, and it maps onto life patterns that feel Jungian in the way you described. But I'm not going to pretend that makes it mathematically proven or anything. It just is what it is.
