So I was reading about a recent paper on rats under anesthesia showing neural activity that hints at quantum nonlocality, and naturally my first thought was, “Great, now even the lab rodents are having ego deaths.” But honestly? It stuck with me. If consciousness actually entangles across space at the quantum level, does that finally put a scientific stamp on the non-dual states meditators have been describing for millennia? Or are we just projecting our spiritual hang-ups onto a microscope?

I’ll be upfront: I don’t claim to know how wave functions or qubits behave. I’m a fifty-something midwife in Tucson who spent half their life chasing chemical highs before trading them for desert sunsets and five years of sober, unglamorous reality. But I’ve delivered enough babies to know that when the boundaries between parent and child dissolve, something shifts in the room. It’s not magic. It’s just presence. Same way I’ve felt during long sits on the cushion. The “self” that’s so busy keeping score just quietly clocks out.

Jung wrote about the collective unconscious as this shared psychic bedrock, and I guess quantum entanglement is just the physics department’s way of saying the same thing with better grant funding. My suspicion? We’re probably caught in some classic apophenia again. Our brains are hardwired to find patterns, so when we feel that boundary-less expansion during meditation, we want a lab coat to sign off on it. And hey, why not? The Tarot’s The Fool has always been about stepping off the cliff with zero baggage, trusting the unknown to catch you. Maybe nonlocality is just the cosmic version of that blind leap.

That said, I’m deeply allergic to the “love and light” crowd who take a peer-reviewed study on neural synchrony and turn it into a self-help mantra. Physics isn’t here to validate our ego strokes. But if consciousness really does operate outside strict locality, then the ancient practitioners weren’t just tripping on bad incense. They were just paying attention.

I’d love to hear how you all are sitting with this. Does entanglement feel like confirmation to you, or just another layer of modern mystification? I’m over here sipping black coffee, watching a hawk circle the saguaro, and trying not to overthink it.
