I’ve been sitting in cross-legged silence for about six months now, mostly because the rain in Seattle doesn’t stop and my old engineering brain needed a system that actually handles noise. What I didn’t expect was for meditation to act like a deeply unhelpful librarian. One minute I’m tracking my breath, the next I’m twelve years old, watching my dad fix a carburetor while a specific smell of gasoline and damp wool floods back. I didn’t even know I’d stored that. The mind really is an archive, but it’s a broken one that only opens when you stop looking for the files.
Here’s the thing I’m wrestling with: how do you hold these things without either shoving them back in the drawer or writing a three-act tragedy around them? I catch myself doing both. Sometimes I just want to clamp down and get back to the "work." Other times I start weaving grand narratives—like that carburetor memory suddenly explains my entire relationship with mechanical failure and why I flinch when things don’t bolt together neatly.
From what I’ve read, David Eagleman points out that memory isn’t a video replay; it’s a reconstruction. Every time we pull a file, we’re essentially rewriting it. That tracks with the Moon card in the Rider-Waite deck, too. The crayfish crawling out of the water, the path between two towers—it’s all about navigating the murky stuff beneath the surface without mistaking the reflection for the shore. You don’t solve the Moon by analyzing it to death. You just walk through it.
I’m trying to practice what I’ll call "low-friction observation." When a memory surfaces, I don’t repress it, but I also don’t hand it a microphone. I just note the texture. Is it sharp? Heavy? Faint? Then I let it dissolve back into the noise. It’s frustratingly unscientific. After thirty years of troubleshooting circuits and a lifetime of chasing perfect takes in the studio, I miss clean diagnostics. I’m used to calculating planetary degrees down to the second, but the subconscious doesn’t respect ephemeris data. My wife left me a house full of silence and a whole lot of unsorted drives. Figuring out how to just sit with the playback, without trying to remaster the track, feels like the actual alchemy.
