Between processing shipments at the port and the endless Manchester drizzle, I usually just lurk on here, but this one actually got me typing. I recall reading somewhere about some research out of Vanderbilt University that suggested certain contemplative practices might stimulate the glymphatic system. For those who don't know, that's basically the brain's waste-clearing network, normally running hardest during deep sleep. The idea that focused stillness could trigger that same cleanup while we're fully awake? It made me pause.

I picked up tarot about two years ago right after a really messy breakup. I didn't do it for predictions—I used the cards as journaling prompts. Pulling a Three of Swords or the Tower forced me to sit with discomfort instead of scrolling or numbing out. Over time, I started noticing how those quiet, structured moments of reflection actually cleared the mental static. It's wild to think there might be a physiological mechanism backing that up. I'm not a neuroscientist, so I'll leave the heavy lifting to the researchers, but the overlap feels too consistent to ignore.

From a Jungian perspective, this reads like shadow work happening at a cellular level. When Carl Jung talked about integrating the unconscious, he wasn't just being poetic. He was describing a process of metabolizing psychological waste. If meditation is literally helping flush out metabolic byproducts while we're consciously holding space for difficult thoughts, that's not a coincidence. It's the nervous system and the psyche finally syncing up. The whole alchemical nigredo phase or the tarot's Death card is basically just a symbolic roadmap for that same cleansing process.

I don't think science is here to "prove" mysticism, and I'm definitely not claiming universal truth. But I do think it's fascinating how ancient contemplative traditions kept pointing toward "clearing the mind" long before we had imaging tech to track it. The body keeps the score, as they say, and sometimes it just needs a quiet room to process.

Has anyone else noticed a physical shift after consistent meditation or deep card work? Like, not just "I feel calm," but actual brain fog lifting, better sleep, that kind of thing? I'd love to hear what's actually happening in your heads.

I get the allure of mapping that glymphatic flush onto the Death card, but I worry we’re just developing our own projections in the darkroom—treating a quiet mind like a solvent when it might just be a mirror. Watching my kid sleep, I don’t see waste being purged; I see a nervous system learning to rest without the pressure to be scrubbed clean. Maybe the real shift isn’t in flushing the system, but in letting the dust settle until it finally turns to soil.
