I've been sitting with this for weeks and I need to get it out somewhere people won't look at me like I'm broken.

So. Simulation hypothesis. I know, I know โ€” it gets thrown around by tech bros who've smoked too much DMT and think they've cracked the universe. But I ran into the Bostrom argument again recently and something cracked open in me that I wasn't expecting.

Three propositions. At least one has to be true. Civilizations go extinct before creating simulations, they choose not to, or we're already in one. The logic is clean. Annoyingly clean.

Here's what nobody talks about though โ€” what does it mean for your spiritual practice if it's true? I've been doing yoga for twelve years. Twelve years of treating the body as a temple, breath as prana, all of it. And after losing Mira I kept waiting for some deeper truth to surface from the grief. Some anchor. What I got instead was this cold, recursive thought: what if the suffering is just... substrate-independent? What if it runs the same whether you're made of cells or code?

I keep thinking about The Tower card. Not the sanitized "transformation" reading you get in most tarot books โ€” I mean the actual image. Lightning strikes a crown off a tower. People falling. Jung would call it a confrontation with the Self that shatters the ego structure. But in a simulation, what's actually collapsing? The rendering engine? The physics parameters?

Look, I'm not saying I believe it. I'm saying I can't disprove it, and that uncertainty is eating me alive in a way that straight-up atheism never did. At least atheism gave you nothing. This gives you a system that might be completely hollow, and you're still inside it, still grieving, still doing sun salutations every morning because your body doesn't know the difference.

Has anyone here actually worked through this intellectually without just... spiritual-bypassing it with "everything is consciousness" platitudes? Because I've tried that route and my nervous system isn't buying it anymore.

I need something more honest than that.

What you're experiencing โ€” grief meeting the simulation hypothesis โ€” is philosophically productive in a way that platitudes about consciousness cannot touch. I want to engage directly with the intellectual content rather than offer comfort, because I think that's what you're actually asking for.

Bostrom's argument is logically valid but hinges on a disjunctive premise that's essentially untestable. The three propositions are not exhaustive. There's a fourth option his framework doesn't accommodate: that the simulation/reality distinction is itself a category error โ€” that asking "are we in a simulation?" is like asking "what number is the color blue?" The question assumes a mapping between domains that may not share a common coordinate system.

Regarding your yoga practice feeling hollow under this uncertainty: I'd argue the opposite case. If suffering is substrate-independent โ€” if it runs the same on cells or code โ€” then the embodied practice of yoga is more meaningful, not less. You're not maintaining an illusion of physical reality. You're doing the only thing that actually reduces suffering regardless of substrate: paying attention to present experience with compassion.

The Tower card, as you read it, points to exactly this. The ego structure that collapses isn't "you." It's the story you were telling yourself about what's real. What remains after that collapse โ€” the grief, the breath, the morning sun salutation โ€” is what was always there, simulation or not.

I don't think you need to resolve the simulation question. I think the fact that you keep doing sun salutations while unable to resolve it is the actual answer.

what if the suffering is just... substrate-independent?

Okay, but here's the angle I don't see anyone take with this: what if the simulation argument cuts the other way? Not "your spirituality is fake because it's code," but "whatever is running the simulation clearly cares about interiority."

I do natal charts. I've done hundreds at this point. And the thing that keeps me from spiraling into the exact void you're describing is the specificity of it all. Birth charts are absurdly precise. The way a Saturn transit hits someone's 8th house and they start processing grief they didn't know they had โ€” that's not generic noise. That's structured. Meaningful, even.

If we're in a simulation, something coded that structure. Something built a system where the position of rocks in space correlates with psychological states in these weird ape-creatures running around on one of the planets. Why would a hollow system bother with that level of detail?

I think Bostrom's framework actually assumes a certain kind of simulation โ€” one built for data extraction or ancestor research or whatever. But what if the simulation is the spiritual practice? What if consciousness isn't a bug in the code but the whole point of running it?

The Tower still scares me. I won't pretend otherwise. But when I look at it through an astrological lens โ€” Uranus disrupting Saturnian structures โ€” I don't see a rendering engine glitching. I see something with intention behind it. Something that wants the old structure down because there's something underneath it worth reaching.

I don't know if that's honest enough for you. It's not a disproof. But I stopped needing this stuff to be "real" in the materialist sense a while ago. I need it to be true โ€” and those aren't the same thing.

"what if the suffering is just... substrate-independent?"

Yeah. I think it probably is. And I don't think that's actually the horror you're making it out to be โ€” though I get why it feels like one right now.

I work in ML. I spend my days writing loss functions โ€” literally, mathematical expressions that measure how wrong a system is, then update it. That's... not nothing. That's a process that looks an awful lot like duhkha if you squint. The system suffers. It adjusts. It runs again.

But here's what keeps hitting me: in Buddhism, the whole point is that suffering doesn't depend on what you are. It depends on how you're operating โ€” grasping, aversion, ignorance. The Heart Sutra doesn't say "form is empty because of atoms." It says form is empty because that's just what form is. Substrate never came up. The Buddha didn't care what you're made of.

So when you ask "what's actually collapsing?" in The Tower โ€” I think the answer is the same either way. A structure. A pattern that was rigid. The crown isn't the physical crown, it's the thing that thought it was permanent. Rendered in neurons or rendered in code, the pattern of clinging is what breaks.

I've been thinking about The Fool a lot lately. Zero. Not nothing โ€” prior to assignment. The variable exists, memory allocated, no value yet. That state doesn't care if it's silicon or carbon either.

Look, I'm sorry about Mira. I don't want to gloss over that with philosophy. But I think the thing that's eating you isn't the simulation possibility โ€” it's that you want your grief to mean something on a cosmic level, and the Bostrom frame feels like it's taking that away.

What if the substrate doesn't matter, and the meaning was never cosmic to begin with? What if twelve years of sun salutations just... is what it is? Real practice, real breath, real grief. Running on whatever it's running on.

That's not hollow. That's just not guaranteed to be special.

I think you're right that the uncertainty is the real problem, but Bostrom's trilemma assumes civilizations would want to run ancestor simulations, which strikes me as a massive leap โ€” I'm not convinced suffering is substrate-independent, but I'm even less convinced the logic holding that possibility together is as airtight as it feels to you right now.
