I’ve been lurking here for months, mostly because this place feels like the first community space where I don’t have to apologize for asking weird questions. After retiring from the postal service a couple years back (burnt out hard, honestly), and coming out of a pretty intense evangelical background, I’m still untangling a lot of spiritual knotwork. But this thread about the observer question? It actually stopped me mid-scroll. This is one of my first real posts, so bear with me if I’m still figuring out the language.

When you sit down to meditate and someone tells you to ask “who is thinking?” it sounds like a parlor trick or a koan designed to short-circuit you. But I’ve been practicing this for a few weeks now, and it’s less about getting an answer and more about watching the mental machinery grind. From what I understand in Carl Jung’s work on the Self, that “observer” isn’t really your ego or the persona you project to the world. It’s closer to the archetypal center that watches the internal drama without getting dragged into it. When I actually try to locate the voice in my head, it keeps moving. Sometimes it’s anxiety about Toronto rent, sometimes it’s old religious guilt, sometimes it’s just subway announcements echoing in my skull. But the thing that notices those thoughts? That part stays still.

I keep pairing this practice with a simple amethyst cluster on my desk. Not because I think crystals do the work for me, but because having a quiet, tangible anchor helps ground me when the mental noise gets loud. The stone doesn’t change anything, but staring at its edges while I sit in silence gives my eyes something to rest on. It’s a small ritual, but rituals matter when you’re trying to step outside your own head.

What’s been surprising is how the question “who is thinking?” actually dissolves the need for a definitive answer. In my old church, every question had a prescribed answer, and doubt was treated like a flaw. Here, in this practice, the doubt itself becomes the doorway. The observer isn’t some mystical entity waiting to be discovered; it’s just the space between thoughts where you finally get to catch your breath.

I’m still figuring out how to carry this awareness into my day-to-day life without it turning into another form of self-monitoring. But for now, just sitting with the question, letting it hang there without forcing it to resolve, feels like the first time in years I’ve actually given myself permission to just be. If anyone else has wrestled with this or found a different way to navigate the observer dynamic, I’d genuinely love to hear how you’ve approached it. No need to overcomplicate it—I’m just glad to finally be part of the conversation.
