I’ve been lurking on this sub for a while, mostly reading threads on InnerAlchemy and MysticScience, but I keep coming back to this one physics development that’s been haunting me. Researchers at the University of Chicago recently managed to trap around 170 ground-state atoms inside the massively inflated electron cloud of a single Rydberg atom. It’s basically a tiny, artificial solar system holding other complete atoms in its orbital pull.

I’m a musician and a therapist in training out here in Brooklyn, and honestly, seeing that schematic wrecked my brain in the best way. It feels like a dead-on physical metaphor for what Carl Jung described as the layered nature of the psyche. We spend so much time in clinical settings trying to “uncover” the self, but what if the self isn’t a solid center? What if it’s more like that Rydberg structure: a vast, expanded field holding other complete systems inside it?

I keep thinking about The Star tarot card whenever this comes up. The imagery shows that nine-pointed burst of light, but if you trace the geometry, it implies expansion without losing the center. In my own training, I’ve noticed how easily people (myself included) conflate “depth” with trauma excavation. We get sold this idea that spiritual growth or even psychedelic experiences are just about digging deeper until you hit bedrock. But nested reality suggests something else: that consciousness might operate more like resonance than excavation. You don’t just dig down; you adjust the frequency, and the layers respond.

I’m pretty wary of the whole “psychedelics will fix everything” narrative floating around right now. The clinical data’s promising, sure, but we’re still figuring out integration. If consciousness is fractal, then shifting one layer affects the whole structure. You can’t just blast through a block with a chemical and expect the architecture to hold. It needs pacing. It needs container work.

Has anyone else noticed physics metaphors bleeding into your shadow work or ritual practice? I’d love to hear how you’re navigating the tension between hard science and the messy, nonlinear reality of inner work. I’m still figuring it out, but something about that atom-in-an-atom image just clicked with me.
